Device Testing for Dental Practices

STK, DGUV V3 and DIN EN 62353 for treatment units, autoclaves and all medical devices

Testing Requirements for Dental Practices

Dental practices have a variety of specialized medical devices that must be regularly tested for electrical safety. In addition to DGUV Vorschrift 3 for all electrical equipment, the MPBetreibV mandates STK for Annex 1 devices.

Special feature of dental practices: Many devices are permanently installed (e.g., treatment units). Electrical safety testing is nevertheless carried out regularly on-site.

Typical Devices in a Dental Practice

  • Dental treatment unit (chair, turbine, suction)
  • X-ray equipment (note: electrical testing only, not radiation protection testing)
  • Autoclaves and sterilizers
  • Ultrasonic scalers
  • Dental lasers (diode, Er:YAG, Nd:YAG)
  • Amalgam separators
  • Compressors (oil-free compressed air)
  • Curing lights
  • Endomotors
  • Intraoral cameras
  • CAD/CAM milling units (e.g., CEREC)
  • Thermal disinfectors

Which Tests Are Required?

Test Legal Basis Typical Devices
STK §12 MPBetreibV Treatment unit (parts with Annex 1 classification), lasers
DIN EN 62353 DGUV V3 / MPBetreibV All medical devices
DIN VDE 0701-0702 DGUV V3 PC, printer, other office equipment

Special Considerations for Dental Practices

Permanently Installed Equipment

The dental treatment unit is a complex system of several medical devices. The electrical safety test covers the entire unit including all connected components (turbine, suction, chair drive, lighting). Testing is performed on-site during regular practice operations.

Note on X-Ray Equipment

I perform the electrical safety test on X-ray equipment (protective conductor resistance, insulation resistance, leakage currents). The radiation protection test (constancy test, expert inspection) is independent and carried out by the responsible authority.

Testing Process in Your Practice

  • Pre-planning - Device list and scheduling for minimal disruption to practice operations
  • Systematic testing - Room by room, treatment unit by treatment unit
  • Visual, measurement and functional test - For each device per the applicable standard
  • Documentation - Test report, test labels, entry in the medical device log
  • Deficiency report - Detailed listing of any deficiencies with recommendations
